I am sitting in one of the most fancy coffee bars of the city, but at least they have high speed internet here. So here I can post pictures with pleasure.

English version

January, a busy month full of changes. We still live in the same flat, although we looked for another. But we live with three people now. The schools are still the same, but the work with the local volunteers changed. Baku is still the same, only I went to Georgia. January also made me go sporting, but I don't know if aerobics without warm-up exercises are that healty. And I started in the youth diversion project of Unicef.

We have a third flatmate now, José Toivainen from Finland. He is also here by the evs programm, but he is here by another organisation. He works as an english teacher in the refugee centre. We're doing ok with three in the flat, even the electricity doesn't complain. Although it has been vere cold in Baku. It even has snowed here the beginning of january, more then 30 cm. We had a lot of snowball fights in the park, on the road, ... It was fun.

The project in school is going fine. We maid some big changes in it. Instead of us calling everyday to see who feels like going to school with us, we maid a team of fixed volunteers. We selected them and even gave them training to come and work with us in school. Together with them we will prepare, do and evaluate the workshops in school. For now it is mainly me and Clara doing it, but we believe that it will change in the future. In the new school the kids are also between 11 and 14. There english is ok, some not, some very good. But they come regularly and they are nice. This week I start about Europe with them. In the other school the number of kids is quite low by now, but action plans are maid to change this.

One of the top moments this month was my visit to Georgia. The meeting with some nice women on the train, who invited us for dinner. Our nice hostesses Nino and Irina, who took care of me and José. With the four of us we visited some touristic places and we ate the traditional food. The day after was even better... I went SNOWBOARDING, so cool. I met Stina in Baku, talking about virginity in a women centre in the old city. After in the pub, we were talking about our country and our normal activities this time of the year. We would both go skiing/snowboarding.... but she went in Georgia, and if I ever went to georgia I was always welcome. And so it happened that I went boarding in joggingpants in Georgia :). of course I didn't have my good clothes with me, but with some creativity and finnish products you can do a lot.

English version:

My first month of Baku is almost passed, time to let everobody know how I am. I'm ok and busy (otherwise I would have maid time earlier to update the blog).

My best wishes for everybody for 2008, may you have the courage to reach for your dreams :).

Baku is gigantic, one big construction site, they're building everywhere. It's a modern city with way too much inhabitants if you ask me. The people are friendly, at least if you fit the image of 'the good citizen'. Taking the metro at half past eleven as a girl doesn't fit this image, I think. At least I don't enjoy taking the metro alone at this time. Maybe because most of the people are guys or maybe because most of those guys stare at the few girls who are there. Furthermore you don't find the muslimculture in the streets. Most women wear the clothes they want (even russian style) and only a few of them where there scarf. Even the mosques are not that visible and you really have to listen to hear the call to the mosque.

The flat is somewhere at the eight floor in the west of the city and of course they are building all around our building. The appartment is fine, with an exception of the electricity, that lives his own live. I live in this appartment together with Clara from Paris, France. Clara is my roommate and projectpartner. My room in this flat is bigger than my rooms in Leuven (the city where I studied) ever where. Even the luxury is fine here, with the exception of the electricity and the fact I don't have water all the time, but only between seven and ten in the morning and evening. So to have a shower in the morning I have to wake up before ten.

The project itself started when Clara arrived in november, so I kinda rolled in to it. The project involves two schools. The kids are about ten to fourteen years old and every group consists of ten to fifteen kids. In one school they don't speak a word english and everything gets translated by local volunteers from AEGEE. In the other school the level of english is quite high for twelve year old kids. In this school the sessions are given in english. The content of the sessions was mostly violence and discrimination in the other school. This are favorite topics of Clara. In the first school there were also some french lessons given. After the winterbreak I will start with Europe and his culture (I don't know if I can get to the values) and afterwards to interculturality.

But from the beginning of january I will also start in a third school. Here the youngsters are between 14 and 16 years old. According to the principal their level of their english is high, but she said mine would still be better. But I don't think mine is that good ... We will see and I will let you know.

Next to all of thing I came in contact with a project manager of Unicef here in Baku. Half of january we will see what I can do, as a criminologist, for the local organisation. As good as I understood, they want to make a project to prevent kids from getting in the prison, which still happens here for the moment. The youngest inmate of the prison is only eight years old!

So I hope I was able to give you some ideas about how I spend my days here. Next to all of this I also have language course for azeri, a social life, ... In the next coming weeks I also have my first dance lessons. If you want to send my something by post, you can do this to the office of AEGEE. (I don't have a mailbox at the appartment.)
